Civil Rights and the Second Reconstruction The Civil Rights era was one of the most tumultuous times in American history. The country appeared at once to be striving forward for social progress and, simultaneously, coming apart at the seams. It is exactly this contradiction which drives our discussion the period known as the Second Reconstruction. Named in reference to the original Reconstruction era which succeeded the Civil War and the abolition of slavery in the South, the Second Reconstruction was akin to its namesake in the intended advance of racial equality and its concurrent effect of retrenchment of white supremacist ideologies. These opposing forces would define a period in American history rightly associated with a violent realization of long-simmering cultural conflict. In many ways, the ball would begin rolling for true Civil Right reform several decades before meaningful reform could be achieved. However, as early as the period immediately following a World War II confl ict distinguished by the horrific excess of its ethnically motivated atrocities, the United States began to reexamine its own record. Teen suicide is one of the leading causes of death among teens and a significant problem in the United States. Consequently, suicide is a tragedy not only for that person, but also for their family and friends that are left behind (Bell). Many teens of all races are affected by this intentional, self-inflicted death. Even though the causes of suicide can be hard to isolate, the signs can be linked to depression, drug abuse, emotional neglect of their parents, bullying, parents divorcing, sexual and domestic abuse. Sadness, feelings of lack of worthiness, uninterested in activities are all signs of depression. Depression is a mood disorder and it is one of the most common signs that lead to suicide. Teenagers let problems take over their live. If this mental disorder is identified in the early stages, professional guidance may solve the problem (Bell). Time is the main factor for depression. Emotional distress is usually what the teenager feels before attempting or completing the act. The only way their behavior will improve is through professional help. Emotional neglect of parents can affect teens in a way that is hard to believe. Parents are busy with their lives and sometimes forget about their children’s emotional needs. Starting in the spring of 1864, around 9,000 Navajo men, women and children were forced on The Long Walk of over 300 miles to Fort Sumner, New Mexico. It was a failure for a combination of reasons. It was designed to supply water, wood, supplies, and livestock for 4,000–5,000 people; it had one kind of crop failure after another; other tribes and civilians were able to raid the Navajo; and a small group of Apaches had been moved there. In 1868, a treaty was negotiated that allowed the surviving Navajos to return to a reservation that was a portion of their former nation. I bet almost everyone in here has never in their life heard of Thoreau, New Mexico. But though it is not commonly heard of, it is full of history and culture.
